Abbotts Street
development gets
'go ahead'
Walsall's New Deal in Partnership with the Bloxwich Community Partnership has received the 'go ahead' from Walsall Council to develop Abbotts Street Canal Side site which includes the existing Stan Ball Centre.
The project that is wholly funded by Walsall's New Deal to a total of £4.8million, will aim to have the builders on site by the end of March 2009. Construction work is expected to last 12 months, with the new centre opening its doors to the public in May of 2010.
The plans include two separate buildings, a single storey replacement of the Stan Ball Centre and a new two storey office development.
The main element of the development is the replacement of the existing, but outdated, Stan Ball Senior Citizens Centre, which dates back to the 1960's.
The new 882m² facility will provide opportunities and accommodation to meet the needs of the older residents of North Walsall.
These will include;
- Adult Learning
- Personal and social development
- Health initiatives
- Guidance and advice
- Meeting space
- Social and sporting leisure facilities
- Luncheon club facilities
The new Stan Ball Centre will be owned and operated by Bloxwich Community Partnership and will include additional Walsall Council facilities, providing a safe and secure environment for those with Learning Disabilities.
Paul Rowlands Chief Executive of Walsall's New Deal said; "This excellent facility for older people will meet a longstanding aspiration of New Deal Board Members. It has been an extremely complex project made possible with the valuable co-operation and goodwill of statutory agencies and local partners".
Dave Chell, Chief Officer of the Bloxwich Community Partnership (BCP) said; "The planning approval is a huge step forward and everyone connected with BCP is looking forward to working with Walsall's New Deal to complete the project for the benefit of the people of Bloxwich and Blakenall. The new centre will provide a range of activities and opportunities for the over 50's, where everyone will be made welcome".
Another key element of the development is the provision of 1,000sqm of separate office accommodation of which NHS Walsall has taken up 500sqm. This part of the development will be owned and operated by Walsall's New Deal and provide space for a range of office based community services.
