New Deal funds
New Railings
At Walsall's New Deal accorn fund grants meeting on 24th May 2007 panel members agreed to support an application of £5000.00 from the Blakenall United Reform Church for the replacement of the Victorian railings around the church on the corner of Blakenall Lane and Chantry Avenue.
The original railings have been in existence for 125 years and have helped to create a distinguishable safe historic boundary, but are now in a poor state of repair. The railings are unique and this is to be taken into consideration when they are replaced. The new railings will improve the look of the streetscape, and will improve the security of the church
Kath Phillips an Elder at the church said; "We recently celebrated the witness of a church on this site for 125 years. As a part of our celebration we decided to improve the appearance of our church with the replacement of the railings. We are very grateful to New Deal for their generous grant aid for this project".
Kath went on to say; "We still need to raise further funds to see the project through and we are hoping that the local community will rally around by sponsoring a 'rail head'; if anyone would like to help they can call me on 479949".
Bill Smith Trade Stakeholder & Chair of the accorn fund panel said; "New Deal is very pleased to be helping the church with this high profile initiative that will considerably improve the streetscape on the corner of Blakenall Lane and Chantry Avenue".
The church group are also planning to consult the local community on the design of the 'rail heads'.
Walsall's New Deal accorn fund benefits the communities of Blakenall, Bloxwich and Leamore and during 2007 have supported numerous community fun days, a Scouts project, a Brownies camping sleepover, the creation of a pigeon club and assistance with resources for a number of parents groups.
The accorn fund panel welcomes applications from the community & voluntary groups within the New Deal area. If you would like an application form then call the Blakenall info Centre on 01922 711228".
