Community Sports
Leaders Awards
After 6 months of hard work 7 New Deal resident volunteers will be receiving their Community Sports Leaders Awards on Tuesday 16th October at the Blakenall Village Centre at 18.30hrs.
Walsall's New Deal Sports Development Team decided to run a Community Sports Leaders Awards course after a group of parents from Harden Primary School said that they would be interested in volunteering and helping out at their local primary school.
The parents met every Wednesday for two hours at either Forest Community Centre or Shelfield Sports and Community College, to complete modules in planning and organisation, leadership, setting-up skills, activities, first aid and the organisation of competitions. They also completed other awards in sports such as rounders, football, rugby and had to volunteer to do lead activities in their community, many of them doing 'way above' the necessary amount of volunteering for their qualification.
The group is already running extra curricular activities in their school, and are looking for opportunities to work in the wider community by either setting up sporting clubs or running activities.
A number of the parents are planning to take their training further to gain Level 2 National Governing Body Awards, this will allow them to become paid coaches.
Beth Alvey, New Deals Sports Development officer said "The scheme has been enjoyable for the participants and the tutors and we are looking forward to working with the next group of adults in the coming year".
