Davie Lamp
installation
New Horizons Community Enterprise in partnership with the Friends of Leamore Park and Walsall Council have created a public art feature for Leamore Park.
The sculpture is to be installed in the park on Thursday 1st October at 12.00noon.
Artist Tim Ward of Circling the Square was commissioned to create the sculpture following the public consultation and workshops that involved a wide range of local residents and users.
The enthusiasm and interest shown from the community has been truly outstanding as local people of all ages put together ideas for the artwork that emphasises the local heritage of the area and the mining history of the park.
From the workshops the artist produced six different designs, which were then made available for the community to be consulted and voted on, and the community decided on the Davey Lamp sculpture.
Ray Walters Chair of the Friends group said; "The sculpture will provide a focal point for the park, we are very pleased with the sculpture and the support that the users and residents have shown for this initiative."
Councillor Barry Sanders, Walsall Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, welcomed the project.
He said: "We have a very proud mining heritage and it's something that we celebrate.
"It's great to see this link with the past marked with this exciting project that the community have had a major say on.
"Gateshead may have its Angel of the North and Brownhills has its miner. Leamore will now have its Davey Lamp."

The project is funded by New Horizons Community Enterprise £20,000.
