Ex Walsall School of Art teacher shows paintings at the New Atrium Gallery

Since her retirement Doreen Miller has been working as hard as ever on a range of projects, the New Atrium Gallery is pleased to be hosting the fruition of her labour with an exhibition of Doreen's latest watercolours.

Doreen started her career by attending the Birmingham College of Art and Handsworth School of Dress Design, on the Soho Road in 1938. Her third year of study, however, was disrupted due to the Second World War manpower shortages, which meant that students were either called to the forces or put on to 'war work'.

As a war worker Doreen did an extensive, ten week 'laboratory work' course and was assigned to an industrial chemist as his assistant for three years doing metallurgical testing in the manufacture of tank tracks. The tracks were used on Monty's tanks so they had to be very hard to combat the abrasive effect of the desert sand!

When the war ended, Doreen continued with her studies and qualified as a teacher in Arts and Crafts. Doreen started her career teaching day and evening classes, full time, at the Walsall School of Art, in Goodall Street, moving on to teaching in further education at the then Walsall Technical College. Finally, nearer to her retirement, Doreen taught evening classes, at Queen Mary's Grammar School, on Sutton Road.

Retirement has allowed Doreen the time to pursue the things that have given her most pleasure; enjoying the countryside, spending more time with her grandchildren, gardening, water colour painting, painting the flowers the garden and listening to classical music.

Doreen Millers exhibition runs from Friday 25th May until Saturday 30th June 2007.
