Jan Keenan

Jan Keenan
New Horizons Community Enterprise welcomes internationally known textile designer and artist Jan Keenan to the Atrium Gallery at the Blakenall Village Centre, who will be exhibiting her work from the 7th August to 12th September

Jan studied at Walsall College of Art and then Manchester Polytechnic, graduating in 1986 with a BA Hons in Printed Textile Design.

Following college Jan worked as a freelance textile designer selling work to the United States, the Far East and in the UK gift-ware industry. (Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Lakeland Plastics have been some of her more recent customers).

This year Jan exhibited at the Crossing St. Paul's, Walsall and has had a painting shown at the Staffordshire Open Exhibition.

Jan said; "My cat and textile paintings are very popular and I have produced a number of pet portraits. I can draw other animals, but so far, no one has asked me to!"

Jan's preferred materials are gouache and pastels on brown parcel paper, although she sometimes works in watercolour.

Jan said; "My love of pattern and colour is fundamental to my work and has resulted in a unique and vibrant collection which combines my fine art skills together with textile composition".

Jan lives in Staffordshire with husband, Steev, daughter, Rosie, and Dolly the cat whose portrait features in the exhibition.

When not painting Jan enjoys loves music and dance; for over twenty years Jan has enjoyed clog dancing with her dance partner, Audrey, travelling all over the country, learning and performing dances from Northumbria, Lancashire, Ireland and the Music Hall traditions. Jan is also a student of Folkloric Egyptian Dance and attends monthly workshops in Manchester taught by Jane Wass.
