Ex Co-op PR man Peter Topham at the Atrium
The Atrium Gallery at the Blakenall Village Centre welcomes Peter Topham a local artist who enjoys working in a range of media.
Peter began his working life at the age of 14 with the Hull Co-operative Society, when the War started, too young to join up, Peter's war effort meant working on the fire watch and joining the Royal Engineers Army Cadets and the Home Guard.
In 1943 Peter joined the Royal Army Service Corps, serving in the U.K, Belgium, Germany and Egypt, rising from driver to company sergeant major.
He returned to work with the Co-op in 1947. After a period of study he was appointed trade representative at the Guildford Co-op. He passed for a scholarship to study Social Service at the Co-operative College in Loughborough, and at the same time achieving two 'O' levels and three 'A' levels'.
Meanwhile Peter began studying advertising, which resulted in a promotion to Publicity and Public Relation Officer at Worcester, where he stayed for 7 years, he then moved to the Walsall Co-op in 1966 as Publicity and Public Relations officer.
During his time in Walsall Peter has served on the board of directors of the Walsall Co-operative Society from 1978 - 1992 much of which as vice-president. Peter has also served as a JP at Walsall's Magistrates Court.
Peter retired in 1989, he was married to Marie in 1966; who sadly died in 1999 and is greatly missed. Peter has two sons, Paul and Stephen and seven grand children.
Peter is exhibiting his work from 20th February until 28th March 2009.

The Atrium Gallery is the only space in Walsall dedicated to showing work by local people and has been called by local artists the 'Peoples Gallery'; set in the professional setting of the Blakenall Village Centre that is also host to a range of services for areas of Blakenall, Bloxwich and Leamore.
