Having a 'smoothie' Summer

Local shoppers in Blakenall had the chance of a 'smoothie' treat.

People outside the Blakenall info Centre last Tuesday were treated to fruit 'smoothie' and fruit salad tasters by Walsall's New Deal Healthy Hearts team the aim being to encourage people to eat more fruit over the summer.

John Jones, Chair of Walsall's New Deal Health Team said; "There is a huge variety of fruit available at this time of the year, making it easy for people to get their 5 a day portions of fruit and vegetables. Encouraging our residents to eat healthily is an important part of our work. People have very busy lifestyles so new, fresh ideas that help people to have a healthy diet are welcome".

Paula Venables - Healthy Hearts Food Access Worker. 'We want to show people how tasty and easy it is to prepare summer fruits'. Kids on summer holidays will also be able to try out some new recipes in cook book's awarded as prizes in the competition run on the day.

Whilst having all this fun the Healthy Hearts team ran a competition about healthy eating. The main prize winner Lindsey Withnall, won a 'smoothie maker' and some cooking equipment to help to get her started in the kitchen.

Cooking is a great summer holiday activity and it doesn't have to be difficult - if you would like some recipes like 'smoothies' to get you started why not pop in and see Paula at the Blakenall info Centre over the summer?
