Stuart's work is steeped in British Modernism and the tradition of English landscape art. His artwork is a personal response to the diverse nature of geography, geology and topography of the British Isles. Ideas are generated through drawings that are realised into three-dimensional forms by a combination of clay coiling and slabbing techniques. Forms and surfaces are altered and allowed to evolve as part of the making process and may undergo several transformations before arriving at the final piece. Matt's work is informed by research undertaken during travel and following his interest in a diverse range of cultures. Ideas have been developed around the theme 'The Tree of Life' and its symbolic and functional relationship to the candlestick, as explored in Mexican Folk Pottery. Ceramic structures are created using large scale moulds and casting with a range of clay slips. Some forms also incorporate mixed media such as turned metals. Matt and Stuart have each delivered artist residencies, community arts projects and undertaken commissions whilst established in artist studios in the West Midlands. They have exhibited together with the Midlands Potters Association at various venues and shown work individually, both nationally and internationally. They both believe that the facility at the Blakenall Village Centre is excellent, offering a valuable opportunity for artists to showcase their work.
