Health & Well Being
Our Vision
"An improvement in the overall health status of residents"
Our Strategic Objectives
The Health and Well Being Theme aims to improve the overall health status of residents who live within the New Deal area by;
- Improving access to health services;
- Delivering appropriate services that meet the health needs of the local community;
- Changing the way in which health services are delivered and commissioned involving the community in the design, development and delivery of health services ensuring that those services are delivered in the right place at the right time in the right way.
Our targets for 2011
- Increase life expectancy at birth by 4.6% in men and 4% in women
- Decrease the Standard Mortality Ratio for Cancers, Strokes & Heart Disease to the Walsall Average.
Our Projects
Blakenall Village Centre
The Blakenall Village Centre has become a true community hub and has exceeded all expectations of use and improved local service delivery. Projects that New Deal expects to develop and improve upon in the Centre with our partners are:
Horizons Restaurant (Eurest)
To continue the provision of healthy options and provide cook and eat sessions with specific target groups, this will increase healthy eating and also up skill residents and promote catering as an employment choice.
Drugs and Alcohol Day Program and Volunteer Scheme (Addaction)
The Drugs and Alcohol Day Program is aimed at making a holistic approach to ensuring that problem drinkers, ex-drug users and those stabilised on a substitute-prescribing program, remain free of the use of alcohol or illicit drug use or are supported to reduce risk taking behaviours. The project operates a structured day care program in which the project officers provide a support package which includes support in:
- Sustaining healthier lifestyles
- Reducing relapse to alcohol or illicit drug taking or erratic use
- Housing needs
- Family support
- Employment and benefits advice
- Access to training opportunities
- Volunteering
There is a community involvement aspect of the project which trains local people to become mentors and trainers in support of the main day programs delivery. Those who participate in this receive accredited certificates in drug and alcohol knowledge from the National Open College Network and a certificate from Addaction on completion of the training scheme.
The project currently operates outreach work in the New Deal area and the project officers can be contacted at the Blakenall Village Centre to provide the service, to ensure residents who have had drug taking problems can be supported to remain off drugs and have positive futures.
